Read Write Inc for Parents & Carers

© Antingham_Southrepps Primary School (176)

Dear Parents / Carers,

As you will be aware, during the last academic year we began to redevelop the reading provision at school by introducing Read Write Inc. To support our continued focus on reading, we opened our new library in September 2021 and this has been a big part of developing our love of life-long reading. This year we are continuing to use Read Write Inc as our successful phonics programme.

We have just invested a significant amount of money in purchasing new Read Write Inc, Book Bag Books. These books ensures the sound (phonics) your child is learning in school relates directly to the book being read at home. Through using the Read Write Inc approach, children develop fluent and confident decoding skills, as well as an understanding of what they are reading.

Today your child has come home with their new Book Bag book. This book will be changed every Monday and it is expected your child keeps this for 1 week. We expect this book to be read each day to develop fluency which develops understanding, confidence and increased comprehension and inference skills. Please ensure you continue to record when you have read this book each time with your child at home in their reading record. If your child has not read the book at home, they will be asked to keep the same book for the week.

In addition to this Book Bag book, your child will also have the following reading books in their book bag:

  • Their daily Read Write Inc book which is being read in class (the frequency of this book being changed will not differ)
  • 2 library books which your child has chosen. These will be changed weekly and we encourage these books being read aloud by an adult to promote a love of life-long reading.

In order for Read Write Inc to continue to be successful, the children must have their reading books and reading record in school every day, but particularly on a Monday when Book Bag books are changed, as this book which your child has read will be given to another child.

How do we decide which book your child has?

We regularly assess your child’s reading. Based upon the results from our ongoing regular reading assessment cycles, the book colour for your child may change. If we notice that your child is excelling at the work in class, and/or that they need more challenge then we may change their book colour. The intention of Read Write Inc is for reading, both in school and at home, to be appropriately challenging and enjoyable.

What happens after Read Write Inc?

For those children who have completed the Read Write Inc programme, they will move onto the higher stages of our existing reading scheme which begins with gold. It is expected that most children in Year 2 will complete the Read Write Inc programme by the beginning/middle of the spring term. At this stage, in order to develop their independence, pupils will be asked to choose their own reading book from their particular colour book band.

Reading for Pleasure

We are so fortunate to have access to a broad range of high quality books within our School Library. Each class will have a weekly visit to the library, during which pupils may choose to take 2 books home to read.  We want to encourage pupils to read a variety of different books and genres from picture books, wordless picture books, poetry, traditional tales, graphic novels, fiction and non-fiction. Whilst their Read Write Inc ‘Book Bag’ book will help develop fluent decoding and understanding, it is very important that they have a broad and rich literary diet. Please continue to record all reading in their reading record.

Missing or Lost Books

As stated earlier, the school has invested a large sum of money into the purchase of our new read Write Inc Book Bag Books. We understand that accidents do happen, and sometimes books are lost, but we need to replace each damaged or lost book. In such circumstances, please inform your child’s Read Write Inc teacher about the name of the book which has been lost/damaged and pay £5.00 to cover the cost of a replacement book.

If the meantime, if you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact us.

Yours sincerely,

Ms Collison

English Lead
