This information is intended to provide clarity and transparency to pupils and parents or carers about what to expect from remote education if local or national restrictions require the entire school or cohorts (or bubbles) to remain at home.

The remote curriculum: what is taught to pupils at home?

Pupils who are self-isolating at home will receive the same curriculum as those children learning in school. Subjects including Art, DT, Spanish, PE, Music and Computing may need some adaptions made to ensure they meet the needs of the child who is learning from home.

What should my child expect from immediate remote education in the first day or two of being at home?

From Day 1, we will ensure children have access to their usual daily timetable this includes the daily teaching of English, Maths, Reading and /or Read Write Inc. Phonics. These lessons will be a combination of live lessons via Teams, pre-recorded videos, the use of learning websites and the use of email and Teams.  

We use White Rose for our Maths teaching, Oxford Owl, 1decision, Language Angels, Kapow and Ruth Please ensure you have a copy of your child’s term on a page as this gives you a detailed overview of what your child is learning each term. Paper copies of this can be requested as and when needed. In addition to the above online learning platforms, please see the final page of this document for our school agreed websites to support our remote learning.

If your child is going to be away from school for more than a few days, we will prepare a learning parcel for you, if you need one. This will contain some levelled reading books, some library books, a White Rose Maths work pack, an exercise book to record work in, a white board and pen, a guided reading or RWI book and any other learning resources which may be needed.  Your child’s teacher will keep in touch via email and telephone during the time of absence and via Teams for regular face to face catch up times both 1:1 and with the class.

Following the first few days of remote education, will my child be taught broadly the same curriculum as they would if they were in school?

We teach the same curriculum remotely as we do in school wherever possible and appropriate. However, we may need to make some adaptations in some subjects. For example, in PE, Spanish, Art or Design Technology where parents may not have the necessary resources available at home. Mrs Land has a PE Teams page and Mrs Ollivier has an Art and DT Teams page for all children to access.

How long can I expect work set by the school to take my child each day?

In line with government expectations it is expected that schools provide on average 3 hours of work per day for KS1 pupils and 4 hours of work per day for KS2 pupils.

How will my child access any online remote education you are providing?

All remote learning will be accessed through Teams. Pupils have their own login information to access this. Learning will be uploaded to Teams daily and will always begin with a welcome pre-recorded video from the class teacher at 8:45 every morning. This welcome will outline your child’s learning for the day as well as communicating any extra information that we feel is needed. Every lesson for each day will be available on Teams by 9:00 each day. Any planned Team meet session codes will be communicated in advance via Teams and you child can join these sessions via their calendar on Teams. Parents/Carers will receive their child’s weekly timetable every Friday before the start of each week.  

If my child does not have digital or online access at home, how will you support them to access remote education?

We recognise that some pupils may not have suitable online access at home. We take the following approaches to support those pupils to access remote education:
If you are unable to access digital or online resources at home, please contact Mrs Flatman via the school office on 01263 833282 in the first instance. We will identify the best way to support the needs of the children which may include considering one or more of the options below:

  • Lending school devices to families
  • Preparing printed packs of resources for collection and return
  • Scheduling regular keeping in touch meetings via the telephone with you, your child and their class teacher
  • We do not expect parents/carers to print out home learning resources and will always try to keep our home learning resources required to a minimum.

How will my child be taught remotely?

We use a combination of the following approaches to teach pupils remotely:
Some examples of remote teaching approaches used in delivery of learning may include, but is not limited to:

  • Pre-recorded daily welcome message or live video chat from your child’s class teacher outlining the learning for the day
  • live Maths sessions via Team to model, recap and consolidate learning
  • White Rose Maths videos, PowerPoints and workbooks
  • Reading books and library books sent home
  • Pupil subscriptions to 1decision (PSHE), Oxford Owl (reading matched to our Read Write Inc phonics), and daily use of and Oak Academy
  • From Monday to Thursday there will be the opportunity for your child to attend an end of the day Teams drop in session with class teacher. This will run from 2:30-3:00 and allows an opportunity for your child to ask any questions relating or answer any misconceptions relating to the work set from the morning.
  • At least once a week there will be a Teams class meet up. This is an opportunity for the class to meet up and see each other. This will be led by your child’s class teacher and may include a story being read and a show and tell opportunity.

What are your expectations for my child’s engagement and the support that we as parents and carers should provide at home?

As a school, we will do all we can to support pupils and families in remote learning. However, we require the support of parents for this to be flexible.

  • We expect pupils to try to complete the tasks set
  • We expect parents to support pupils by setting up a routine for learning and ensuring pupils have a suitable working environment
  • It is our aim for children in upper KS2 (Year 5 & 6) to be able to access their learning with greater independence. We understand that our younger learners will require a considerable amount more adult support from both home and school and our learning and approaches are tailored to match these varying needs.

How will you check whether my child is engaging with their work and how will I be informed if there are concerns?

Our Monday to Thursday, our end of the day check in sessions allow an opportunity for your child and their teacher to check and discuss any work set. All work set with be through Teams Assignments. This enables you child to not only access their work but to submit it back to their class teacher with confidentiality. Class teachers will provide feedback to pupils via Teams Assignments at least twice a week and feedback will be a comment returned via Teams assignment or verbally during a live session. During our maths live sessions your child has an opportunity to ask their teacher questions from the video and PowerPoint for each lesson. In addition to this we will also:

  • Keep a register of children who have commented or replied back to the morning pre-recorded message sent by class teachers. It is expected pupils reply back to this every morning by 9:15
  • A register will be kept of attendance to all live sessions as well as completed work
  • If we are concerned that a pupil is not engaging or registering in the morning a welfare telephone call will be made by the class teacher and/or member of the SLT
  • If your child is ill and can not access their remote learning please report their absence in our usual way either via parent mail or by calling Mrs Flatman in the office.

How will you assess my child’s work and progress?

Feedback can take many forms and may not always mean extensive written comments for individual children. For example, whole-class feedback or quizzes marked automatically via digital platforms are also valid and effective methods, amongst many others. In addition to the above feedback:

  • will vary according to the work set but will be given using Teams.
  • Sometimes, may be given over the telephone, 1:1, to a parent/carer or verbally in a Teams meet if this is deemed necessary.

We will always ensure our feedback is positive and supportive. 

How will you work with me to help my child who needs additional support from adults at home to access remote education?

We recognise that some pupils, for example some pupils with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), may not be able to access remote education without support from adults at home. We acknowledge the difficulties this may place on families, and we will work with parents and carers to support those pupils in the following ways:

  • If your child is supported on our SEND register they may be provided with specific learning activities to meet their individual needs.
  • If your child has an EHCP they will be invited to attend school to complete their learning, unless they are unable to do so due to self-isolating.
  • Where appropriate, regular contact will be made with parents and carers by the SENCO and class teachers to support the remote learning of these pupils at home.
  • If your child has 1:1 support and not in school their 1:1 support will maintain regular contact with parents and will offer additional Teams sessions as/when necessary to further support their learning and well-being from home

We will maintain our high expectations for all our SEND pupils. Their learning will continue to be tailored and adjusted to meet their needs on an individual case by case basis. Examples of adaptations and extra support your child may receive are, an adult may hear them read more frequently, tasks may be set over a number of days with slightly extended deadline dates for work set and we may offer more guidance for parents. Our SENCO will continue to monitor the provision for our SEND pupils and will be available to support our parents and pupils when required. We will continue with our cycle of target setting and reviews, maintaining our SEND cycle alongside our robust pupil progress cycles. 

My child is in Early Years. What remote learning will be provided?

We will provide remote learning for ALL children in Reception and Nursery.

Nursery Pupils
For children in Nursery we will use Tapestry as a way of communicating and setting tasks. There will be a menu of options for children in Nursery to work through, a recorded story of the week read by a member of the Nursery team, 1-2 welfare checks by a member of the Nursery team via the telephone and an opportunity for your child to take part in a 1:1 show and tell live video session once a week for 10 minutes with a member of the Nursery team.  We will also encourage you to continue to share what you are doing at home on Tapestry as this allows us to maintain a clear and consistent picture of your child’s learning from home.

Reception Pupils
For children in Reception we will use Teams as a way of communicating, setting tasks and taking part in live video lessons. Your child will be set learning in English, Phonics, reading, maths, PSHE, Science and Topic. We will try to keep all work set as practical as possible and we are mindful that we can not always mirror exactly what is happening in school for those children at home, though we will always try our best to do so.

 For Mathematics, we use White Rose Maths and we will send via your child’s Teams account video links, PowerPoint slides and work to complete at home linked to the learning taking place in the classroom. Learning for English will be set via Teams. For phonics we will use videos and content from Oxford Owl and Ruth Miskin Read Write Inc website. All links for this will be sent via your child’s Teams account. Your child has their Oxford Owl account and log in allowing them the opportunity to continue to read on a daily basis.  

At some point during the school day there will be a 1:1 video session via Teams scheduled with the class teacher. This is an opportunity to discuss and show the work set from today as well as ask any questions or go over any misconceptions. Throughout the day there will be opportunities for your child to join parts of the lesson live via Teams. These will be scheduled on an individual basis and will be dependent on the lesson content and structure. Your child will receive the same content and learning activities as those children working in school though we are mindful on the type and amount of resources which could be needed and will adapt this for learning at home.

Explorify at home is a weekly supply of activities for parents and carers to do with their children at home. It is based on the primary science curriculum, but easy to do at home -
